Poem by Rabia of Basra (Iraq 717-801). Painting by Laura Summer. Sculpture by Angela Foster September 2020.
Poem by St. Catherine of Siena (Italy, 1347-1380). Painting by Laura Summer. Sculpture by Sandra “Sandy” LaGrega, September 2020
Sandy’s Process:
I read through Laura Summer’s book In the Figure of Divine Substance; 33 paintings in response to poetry of woman poets as they describe their relationship to God.
I chose one that spoke to me, “His Lips Upon The Veil” by St, Catherine of Siena (Italy, 1347-1380)
I practiced making a dodecahedron. It was harder than I thought., but I carried on.
I read the poem and looked at Laura’ s painting. I lived with them for a couple of weeks.
I copied the poem and painting. Using a template, I cut out the dodecahedron from the copy of painting, sheet of typing paper and a sheet of construction paper. Then I glued the three dodecahedron templates together.
I copied the poem, folded it and tied it with golden thread to place inside the dodecahedron.
I glued the sides together and placed a veil around it tying it with the same golden thread. This golden thread is very special given to me by my friend and mentor, Janet Hampton. Janet crossed the threshold Jan 4, 2007.
I am reminded of the dictum from Isis; “I am (hu)man, I am Past, the Present and the Future. Every mortal should lift my veil.”
5 dodecahedrons prayerfully constructed by Angela Foster, Hazel Archer-Ginsberg & Nancy Melvin; inscribed with sacred texts from various sources featured in Laura Summer’s work.
